- (1947- )A true English gentleman, he was born in Nottingham, England, and opened a men's clothing store there in 1970. Smith opened a second store in London in 1976 and showed his own collection in Paris the same year. He became famous for designing traditional English tailored suits with a twist. His signature "naked lady" design, which is hidden inside cuffs and collars, is part of the allure of his clothing. Smith's empire consists of stores worldwide that carry his full line of clothing for men, women, and children, as well as accessories and fragrances. He is known as the most successful of all British designers and was awarded knighthood by the queen in 2001. In 2006, Smith sold a 40 percent stake in the company to Japanese licensee Itochu.
